Abstract   (551 Views)
Aims: This study aimed to compare lifestyle factors among patients with ankylosing spondylitis and Sjögren’s syndrome and matched healthy controls.
Materials & Methods: This study consisted of two case-control studies: one involving a case group with ankylosing spondylitis (n=33) and a control group (n=100), and another involving a case group with Sjögren’s syndrome (n=120) and a control group (n=120). Data were collected on lifestyle factors, including physical activity, place of residence, sleep, cigarette and tobacco use, and stress in daily life. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24 and the chi-square test.
Findings: Compared with controls, the ankylosing spondylitis group differed significantly in educational level (p<0.001) and body mass index (p=0.02), and had higher rates of cigarette smoking (p<0.001) and alcohol use (p=0.001). No significant differences were observed for gender, physical activity, living place, residence in a mold- or damp-prone home, emotional stress, or tobacco smoking (p>0.05). Compared with controls, the Sjögren’s syndrome group differed significantly in educational level (p<0.001), body mass index (p=0.001), and living place (p=0.006). Tobacco smoking (p=0.003) and alcohol use (p=0.001) also differed significantly between groups, with lower rates among patients with Sjögren’s syndrome. No significant differences were observed for gender, physical activity, living in a mold- or damp-prone home, emotional stress, or cigarette smoking (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Ankylosing spondylitis is more common in males and linked to healthier body mass index but higher smoking and alcohol use, whereas Sjögren’s syndrome is more common in females and associated with shorter sleep, less sunlight exposure, and greater stress.
